A leadership crisis is brewing within the Nigerian Medical Association as over 200 delegates are expected to gather in Abuja on Wednesday for an emergency meeting.
The development follows the disqualification of several candidates in the association’s annual delegates’ elections, a move that has sparked widespread backlash.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Chairman of the State Chairmen Forum, Oreyemi Ifedayo, said the disqualifications had been strongly opposed by state chairmen, caucuses, and the Committee of Past Presidents, all of whom have urged the NMA President, Bala Audu, to overturn the decision.

He warned that the situation could lead to a breakdown of order within the association.
Ifedayo explained that the emergency meeting became necessary after previous attempts to resolve the issue failed.
He added that the Committee of Past Presidents had already resolved that the disqualifications should be reversed to ensure fairness, stressing that its decisions are binding under the association’s constitution.
He, however, expressed concern that the NMA leadership had ignored these recommendations, cautioning that the current stance could trigger serious internal unrest.
