Gunmen on Friday abducted at least 15 passengers along the Calabar–Oron waterway in Cross River State.

It was gathered that coordinated search-and-rescue operations are currently underway to secure the release of the victims.

The passengers were kidnapped while travelling on a Sea Express boat from Calabar to Oron, prompting a joint security response involving multiple agencies.

Confirming the incident, the Cross River State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said the command had activated rescue efforts in collaboration with the Akwa Ibom State Police Command and the Nigerian Navy.

According to him, security operatives are working in synergy to ensure the safe return of the abducted passengers.

He added that both search-and-rescue and tactical operations have been deployed to track down the attackers and free the victims.

The police urged members of the public to remain calm and support ongoing efforts with useful information that could assist the operation, noting that updates would be provided as developments unfold.

A naval officer, who spoke anonymously to the News Agency of Nigeria, said the attackers reportedly ambushed the ferry during its journey from Calabar in Cross River State to Oron in Akwa Ibom State.

The Calabar–Oron route is a major inland waterway connecting both states and is heavily used for passenger and goods transport.

However, the corridor has increasingly become a hotspot for piracy, kidnappings, and armed attacks due to its complex network of creeks and mangroves, which are often exploited by criminals.
