AWKA INDIGENES PETITION IGP OVER ALLEGED ABUSE OF POWER BY POLICE OPERATIVES

A group of Awka indigenes in Anambra State, operating under the banner of Concerned Citizens of Awka, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, over alleged abuse of police authority.
The group accused officers of the Anambra State Police Command of interfering in a long-standing land dispute between Awka and its neighbouring community, Nibo, despite a court ruling on the matter.
In the petition signed by its coordinator, Mr Sunday Ezebunamadu, the group also criticised what it described as arbitrary arrests linked to the case involving Chief Kenneth Afamefuna Ezekwesili of Umuike village, Awka.
The petitioner alleged that the claimant to the disputed land, Chief Ezekwesili, has been repeatedly harassed by rival claimants from Nibo, allegedly with the involvement of operatives from the Anambra State Police Command, whom they suspect may have been compromised.
They warned that such actions could heighten tensions and potentially lead to communal conflict between both communities, stressing that the police are expected to remain neutral and promote peace.
Portions of the petition read: “We, the concerned citizens of Awka in Anambra State, respectfully bring to your attention a matter of serious concern involving alleged abuse of police authority and undue interference in a long-standing land dispute.
“Police officers are allegedly taking sides in a civil land matter already determined by an appellate court. We believe law enforcement actions are being used to frustrate the enforcement of valid court judgments.
“If these allegations are true, they constitute a serious departure from the constitutional role of the police, which is to maintain peace and not to adjudicate land ownership disputes.”
The people of Awka are firm believers in the rule of law, stressing that upholding court decisions without unlawful interference is vital to preserving public confidence in both law enforcement and the justice system.
