NIGERIA POLICE MOURNS FALLEN INSPECTOR, ORDERS INVESTIGATION INTO FATAL IMO ROAD ACCIDENT

The leadership of the Nigeria Police Force has mourned the death of Inspector Habila Mangai, who died in a fatal road traffic accident while on stop-and-search duty along the Owerri–Okigwe Road in Imo State.

The incident occurred on April 18, 2026, at Amaraku, where the late officer, attached to the Isiala Mbano Division, was reportedly knocked down by a Mack truck during lawful duty operations.

According to a statement from the Force, Inspector Mangai was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, where he was confirmed dead by medical personnel. His remains have since been deposited in the hospital mortuary.

The truck driver, identified as Chisom Ajah, alongside the vehicle, has been taken into custody and handed over to the State Motor Traffic Department (SMTD), Owerri, for further investigation.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased, colleagues, and the Imo State Police Command, describing the incident as painful and unfortunate.

He assured that a full investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident and ensure that justice is served.

The Police also urged motorists to exercise caution and adhere strictly to traffic regulations, especially around operational checkpoints and police duty posts.
