ELEPHANT ATTACK KILLS ONE, LEAVES ANOTHER MISSING IN OYO COMMUNITY

One person has been confirmed dead while another has been declared missing following an attack by a wild elephant in Innayin Community, Oyo State.

The incident, which occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, threw residents into panic after the animal reportedly appeared suddenly within the community.

The Oyo State Police Command, through its spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, confirmed the development in a statement, noting that security operatives swiftly responded to a distress call.

“Upon receiving the alert, police operatives, in collaboration with local vigilantes and hunters, mobilised to the scene. On arrival, the lifeless body of one Ibrahim Tijani, 45, was discovered in a nearby bush with injuries consistent with an animal attack,” the statement read.

The remains of the deceased have since been evacuated to the General Hospital, Iwere-Ile, for examination and preservation.

The police further disclosed that another resident, identified as Alhaji Muhammadu Bingin, aged 50, is currently missing following an encounter with the same elephant.

“Intensive efforts are ongoing to locate the missing ব্যক্তি,” the statement added.

Security personnel, alongside local hunters and vigilantes, have been deployed to contain the situation and prevent further casualties.

Residents of Innayin and neighbouring communities have been urged to remain calm, avoid the affected areas, and report any sighting of the elephant to authorities.

The command also stated that relevant agencies, including the National Park Service, are being engaged to provide expert guidance on safely managing the situation in line with wildlife conservation laws.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Abimbola Olugbenga, reassured residents of ongoing efforts to restore safety.

“Our officers are fully on ground, working with relevant stakeholders to secure the area and prevent further casualties. We urge residents to cooperate with security agencies as we work to bring the situation under control,” he said.
