The Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) has given the Federal Government a 14-day deadline to present concrete and measurable steps aimed at tackling the growing kidnapping crisis across Nigeria.

In a statement signed by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Judith Aguenu, the party expressed concern over the worsening insecurity in many parts of the country, describing kidnapping as a major national challenge threatening lives, economic activities, and social stability.

The DLA argued that recent government initiatives, including plans to recruit 1,000 forest guards, have not sufficiently reassured Nigerians that authorities fully understand the scale of the problem.

According to the party, kidnapping has become a recurring occurrence nationwide, with citizens increasingly being abducted from highways, homes, schools, farms, places of worship, and communities.

It noted that the widespread fear of abduction is restricting freedom of movement, disrupting businesses, affecting agricultural production, and undermining social development.

The party further stated that rural communities have been particularly hard hit, as many farmers are abandoning their farmlands due to security concerns, thereby worsening food insecurity and economic hardship.

The DLA said many of its members across the country have personally experienced the effects of the deteriorating security situation, adding that families and communities now live under constant fear while criminal groups continue to operate with little restraint.

The party observed that kidnapping has evolved into a major criminal enterprise in several parts of the country, fuelled by factors such as weak law enforcement, unemployment, porous borders, and the proliferation of illegal weapons.

While acknowledging the need for security deployments, the DLA stressed that addressing kidnapping requires a broader approach that tackles underlying economic and governance challenges.

It called on the government to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve security coordination, deploy modern surveillance technology, address corruption within public institutions, and ensure the swift prosecution of criminal suspects and their sponsors.

The party also urged President Bola Tinubu to declare the kidnapping crisis a national emergency and implement stronger, coordinated measures to reverse the trend.

Consequently, the DLA issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to unveil and begin implementing practical strategies specifically targeted at reducing kidnappings and restoring public confidence in the nation’s security architecture.

The party warned that if meaningful progress is not demonstrated within the stipulated period, it may pursue lawful democratic actions, including public advocacy, engagement with national and international stakeholders, and possible legal measures to draw attention to the worsening security situation.

The DLA maintained that safeguarding lives and property remains the primary responsibility of government and called for urgent action to ensure Nigerians can live without fear of abduction, ransom demands, or violent attacks.
