REPS CALL FOR PROBE, RELIEF FOR VICTIMS OF DEADLY BAUCHI COMMUNITY CLASH

The House of Representatives has called for a thorough investigation into the deadly clash between farmers and herders in Lanzai and neighbouring Dosho communities of Darazo Local Government Area, Bauchi State, which left nine people dead and displaced many residents.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Mansur Manu Soro, the lawmaker representing Darazo/Ganjuwa Federal Constituency, during Wednesday’s plenary session.
While presenting the motion, Soro informed the House that the violent confrontation, which occurred last Wednesday, resulted in fatalities, injuries, and extensive destruction of property.
According to him, nine people lost their lives during the incident, while dozens of homes and sources of livelihood were destroyed. He noted that about 50 residential huts were set ablaze during the violence.
The lawmaker expressed concern over the humanitarian consequences of the clash, stating that many families had been displaced, leaving women, children, and the elderly exposed to difficult living conditions.
Members of the House also raised concerns about the recurring nature of farmers-herders conflicts across the country, warning that such violence continues to threaten national security, agricultural productivity, and economic development.
In its resolutions, the House urged the Inspector-General of Police to deploy adequate investigative and intelligence resources to the affected communities to identify, arrest, and prosecute those responsible for the attacks.
Lawmakers also called on the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) to strengthen intelligence gathering, threat assessments, and early-warning operations in the area to prevent further violence and reprisals.
Recognising the humanitarian impact of the crisis, the House appealed to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) to provide immediate assistance to affected residents, including food, shelter, medical care, relief materials, and psychosocial support.
The lawmakers further urged the Federal Government, through the NEDC, to support the reconstruction of homes, community infrastructure, and livelihoods destroyed during the conflict.
To address the underlying causes of recurring farmers-herders clashes, the House called on the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to fast-track sustainable livestock management policies, ranching initiatives, grazing control measures, and conflict-resolution frameworks.
The House subsequently mandated its Committees on Police Affairs, National Security and Intelligence, Emergency and Disaster Preparedness, and the North-East Development Commission to oversee implementation of the resolutions and report back within six weeks.
Farmers-herders conflicts remain one of Nigeria’s major security challenges, particularly in rural communities where disputes over land, grazing routes, and water resources frequently escalate into violence, resulting in deaths, displacement, and disruption of agricultural activities.
