The Edo State Ministry of Education has strongly condemned the violent assault of a student at Igbinedion Education Centre in Benin City after a disturbing video of the incident circulated on social media.
In the viral video, two students were seen taking turns to physically attack another student who was lying helpless on the floor, sparking widespread public outrage.
In a statement released on Saturday, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Edith Ebomoyi, described the act as unacceptable and contrary to the values expected in schools across the state.
“The Ministry strongly condemns this act of violence in the strongest possible terms. Such behaviour is completely unacceptable and runs contrary to the values of discipline, respect, and safety which all educational institutions in Edo State are expected to uphold,” the statement said.
According to the ministry, the safety and well-being of students remain a top priority for the government.
To address the situation, the ministry announced the immediate constitution of a five-man investigative committee to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify all students involved.
The committee has been mandated to determine those responsible and recommend appropriate disciplinary actions in line with the regulations guiding school conduct in Edo State.
The ministry also assured parents, school authorities, and the public that justice would be served and that measures would be taken to prevent similar incidents in schools across the state.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force has invited the parents of the assaulted student to file a formal complaint so that an official investigation can commence.
Police authorities said the first step would be to properly identify the victim and gather the necessary details to proceed with the case.
Following the public backlash, the management of Igbinedion Education Centre has expelled the two students allegedly responsible for the attack. The assault was reportedly filmed by another student who was present during the incident.
