Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested three suspects for alleged illegal gold mining in Mallam Jakwa Town.
The commission disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, noting that the suspects were apprehended by its Maiduguri Zonal Directorate following actionable intelligence.
According to the agency, the suspects — Umar Muhammad, Modu Bamai Umar, and Sani Samaila — were allegedly involved in unlawful mining activities contributing to insecurity and environmental degradation in the state.
“Operatives of the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the EFCC have arrested three suspected illegal gold miners in Borno State,” the statement read.
“They were arrested in Mallam Jakwa Town, Hawul Local Government Area, following actionable intelligence on their illegal activities.”
The commission added that items recovered from the suspects include mined gold and a gold measuring device.
It stated that the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The latest arrests come weeks after the EFCC’s Ilorin Zonal Directorate apprehended 10 suspected illegal miners along the Ilorin–Ogbomosho Road over similar offences.
Similarly, the Zamfara State Police Command had on February 1 arrested 21 illegal miners in Zurmi and Maradun Local Government Areas of the state during a joint operation involving multiple security agencies.
Authorities say the sustained crackdown highlights growing concerns over illegal mining activities, which have been linked to rising insecurity and environmental damage across parts of the country.
