The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has issued a strong warning to land grabbers in Abuja, urging them to desist from activities that deprive host communities of the benefits of democracy.
Wike made the remarks on Thursday during the commissioning of the newly constructed Airport Road (Bill Clinton Drive) leading to Tunga Madaki Community, as part of projects marking President Bola Tinubu’s third year in office.
He cautioned individuals encroaching on community lands, stressing that development projects must benefit the people directly affected.
“Let me warn the land grabbers who are here: allow the communities to enjoy the dividends of democracy, because you too deserve it,” Wike said.
The Minister also urged residents to question those who neglect community development, asking why they failed to provide infrastructure such as roads when the need was most critical.
Wike commended the leadership of Tunga Madaki Community for engaging constructively with his administration during the planning and execution of the project.
He noted that the community made several requests, including employment opportunities and road construction, which were addressed by the government.
“Without you, we would not have known the community called Tunga Madaki. They requested jobs, and we employed them. They also requested roads, and we responded,” he said.
He expressed surprise at the level of infrastructural neglect in the area prior to the intervention, particularly the lack of access roads linking the community to the city and the international airport.
Wike said the Tinubu administration’s “Renewed Hope” agenda was already restoring confidence among previously neglected communities, adding that the projects were evidence of renewed government presence and impact.
