FG ORDERS IMMEDIATE CLOSURE OF 47 FEDERAL UNITY COLLEGES OVER SECURITY THREATS
By Aishat Momoh. O.

The Federal Ministry of Education has directed the immediate shutdown of 47 Federal Unity Colleges across the country in response to rising security concerns.
In a circular dated 21 November 2025 (erroneously printed as December 21, 2025), and signed by Hajia Binta Abdulkadir, Director, Senior Secondary Education Department, on behalf of the Honourable Minister of Education, the federal government said the move was necessary to prevent potential security breaches.
The statement, addressed to all principals of Federal Unity Colleges, read in part:
“Sequel to the recent security challenges in some parts of the country and the need to prevent any security breaches, the Honourable Minister of Education has approved the immediate closure of the listed Federal Unity Colleges (FUCs) with immediate effect.”
The ministry instructed principals of affected schools to ensure strict compliance with the directive.
The circular did not specify the states or schools affected, noting that the list was attached separately. However, it underscored that the decision was geared towards safeguarding the lives of students amid current security threats.
This development comes amid growing concern over attacks on learning institutions in parts of the country, including recent abductions in northern states.
The ministry extended “warm regards of the Honourable Minister” while stressing that the closure is a preventive and urgent action to protect students.
Further details, including reopening timelines and security reinforcement strategies, are expected from the ministry in due course.
