FG TO PROVIDE ELECTRICITY TO 17.5 MILLION NIGERIANS THROUGH $750M RENEWABLE ENERGY PROJECT
Agency Report
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to electrifying rural communities across Nigeria, targeting 17.5 million citizens through a $750 million renewable energy initiative.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Mr. Abba Aliyu, gave the assurance on Friday during the inauguration of a 620KW small hydropower-solar PV hybrid system project at the Balanga Dam in Talasse, Balanga Local Government Area of Gombe State.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Aliyu said the initiative is part of the Distributed Renewable Energy Scale-up Project, a partnership between the Federal Government and the World Bank.
“This is the first time in the history of the country where means of powering all the communities have been designed by REA, as directed by President Tinubu,” he stated.
He added that the Tinubu-led administration had approved the largest public sector renewable energy investment in Nigeria’s history $750 million to power 17.5 million Nigerians, with an additional \$200 million approved for further expansion of access to electricity.
Aliyu disclosed that the REA had launched the implementation of 42 interconnected mini-grids and signed grant agreements with eight developers to accelerate rural electrification.
According to him, all rural communities without access to electricity have been identified and mapped nationwide. Their individual peculiarities and the lowest-cost electrification models have been documented.
He noted that the government is also implementing plans to establish 100 mini-grids across the country to improve electricity access and drive economic development in underserved areas.
