The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a middle-aged man, David Anoke, by yet-to-be-identified gunmen in the Okposi community, Ohaozara Local Government Area of the state.
The incident, which occurred over the weekend at the Court Area of Okposi, was confirmed on Monday morning by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, in a text message to Channels Television.
Ukandu disclosed that officers had been deployed to the area while investigations were ongoing, adding that normalcy had since been restored.
“Yes, the command is investigating the killing of one person in Okposi. Meanwhile, officers have been deployed to the area and normalcy has since returned,” he said.
Reacting to the development, the Chairman of Ohaozara Local Government Area, Ajah Chinonso-Consider, condemned the attack, stressing that the era of extrajudicial killings in the council must come to an end.
Chinonso-Consider described Ohaozara as a land of peace, unity, and coexistence, made up of the communities of Uburu, Okposi, and Ugwulangwu, and vowed that criminal elements would not be allowed to destroy that reputation.
“We cannot allow the activities of criminal elements to tarnish this reputation or destabilise our people. I call for calm, collaboration, and cooperation from all residents as security agencies at both the federal and state levels have already commenced swift investigations to ensure that the perpetrators of this evil act are apprehended and brought to justice,” he stated.
As part of proactive security measures, the local government has imposed a curfew on motorcycles and tricycles (keke), restricting their movement in and out of Okposi between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. daily.
The council boss appealed to stakeholders, traditional rulers, civil society organisations, religious leaders, town union executives, and community leaders to support security agencies in restoring peace.
“We do not have any other home but Ohaozara, and together we must protect it from the menace of extrajudicial killings, violence, and other criminal activities. Let us stand united, remain vigilant, and work collectively with security agencies to restore lasting peace to our land,” he added.
