The management of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, has appealed to members of the public to assist in identifying and locating the relatives of an unidentified man whose body has remained unclaimed in the hospital mortuary weeks after his death.
In a statement released on Friday by the hospital’s Public Affairs Unit, the deceased was described as a man believed to be about 35 years old who was involved in a road traffic accident in the Government Reserved Area (GRA) of Gombe State.
The hospital said the victim was brought in by an official of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after he was reportedly struck by a hit-and-run driver.
According to the statement, he was admitted on Friday, May 15, 2026, but later died on Sunday, May 17, 2026.
The hospital further disclosed that the deceased was approximately 155.4 centimetres tall and bore distinct horizontal tribal marks on both upper cheeks, details which may help in identifying him.
“The deceased is an unknown male of about 35 years of age. He was involved in a pedestrian road traffic accident at GRA, Gombe State, and was brought to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, by an official of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission after being hit by a hit-and-run driver,” the statement read.
It added that despite efforts to trace his family, no relatives have come forward to claim the body.
The hospital therefore urged anyone with useful information about the deceased or his relatives to contact the appropriate authorities to assist in identification and burial arrangements.
The appeal highlights growing concerns over the increasing number of unclaimed bodies in mortuaries due to difficulties in tracing relatives of accident victims.
