The Independent National Electoral Commission has extended the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise by two weeks and announced the introduction of a self-service voter registration platform for eligible first-time voters.

The commission disclosed this in a press release issued on Friday, saying the decision followed a review of the nationwide CVR exercise and feedback received from its state offices, political parties, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.

According to the commission, the nationwide voter registration exercise, which commenced on August 18, 2025, and was originally scheduled to end on July 10, 2026, will now close on Friday, July 24, 2026, to provide additional opportunities for eligible Nigerians who are yet to register.

INEC said the extension reflects its commitment to ensuring that every eligible Nigerian has a fair and reasonable opportunity to be captured in the National Register of Voters ahead of future elections.

The electoral umpire also announced the introduction of a self-service registration option, exclusively for first-time voters, as part of efforts to improve accessibility and service delivery.

The commission said the platform will become operational on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, through its dedicated CVR portal, where users will also have access to a step-by-step registration guide.

According to INEC, the self-service option will enable eligible Nigerians to initiate and complete their voter registration process, including biometric capture, using their personal devices without the need to physically visit an INEC office.

The commission, however, noted that the system incorporates robust identity verification, biometric validation and backend integrity checks to preserve the credibility and accuracy of the National Register of Voters.

INEC urged all eligible Nigerians who are yet to register to take advantage of the extended registration period and embrace the new technology-driven registration option.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a credible, inclusive and accessible voter registration process while leveraging technology to enhance citizens’ participation in the electoral process.

The statement was signed by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, and dated July 3, 2026.
