Iran have begun their preparations for the FIFA World Cup with a 3–1 comeback victory over Gambia in a friendly match played in Antalya, Turkey.

The match was part of Iran’s build-up ahead of the tournament, but their preparations continue to face logistical challenges as players are still awaiting visas to enter the United States, where they are scheduled to play their group-stage matches.

The team has reportedly shifted its base to Mexico due to heightened tensions between Iran and the United States amid ongoing geopolitical issues in the Middle East.

In Friday’s friendly, Iran went into half-time trailing 1–0 before staging a second-half comeback, scoring three goals within a 20-minute spell.

Olympiacos forward Mehdi Taremi was among the scorers as Iran overturned the deficit to secure the win.

The match was played in Antalya, where Iran are also scheduled to face Mali in another friendly next Thursday as part of their final preparations.

Iran will begin their World Cup campaign on June 16 in Los Angeles against New Zealand.

They are also grouped to face Belgium in Los Angeles and Egypt in Seattle in subsequent group-stage fixtures.
