LAGOS APP-BASED DRIVERS LAMENT UNSUSTAINABLE FARES, POOR WORKING CONDITIONS ON BOLT

App-based drivers in Lagos have raised concerns over what they describe as poor working conditions and unsustainable fares on the Bolt ride-hailing platform.
Speaking on behalf of drivers under the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), Public Relations Officer Steven Iwindoye said rising fuel prices, high vehicle maintenance costs, and growing operational expenses have made it increasingly difficult for drivers to earn a decent income.
Iwindoye noted that after deductions for platform commissions and operational costs, many drivers are left with minimal earnings despite working long hours daily. “This situation is not only unfair, but also threatens the livelihood and dignity of thousands of hardworking drivers who depend on this work to support their families,” he said.
He added that drivers also face safety concerns, unfair account deactivations, and sudden policy changes introduced without adequate consultation. Previous meetings with the platform, he said, have failed to deliver meaningful improvements.
“At this critical moment, drivers are demanding real reforms, fair pricing structures, transparent policies, and stronger protection for those who power the platform,” Iwindoye emphasized, calling for unity among drivers and caution regarding proposed roundtable discussions until clear evidence emerges that solutions will be implemented.
“The voice of drivers must not be ignored, and their concerns must be treated with the seriousness they deserve,” he concluded.
