MADUGU REVEALS TACTICAL SWITCH THAT SEALED SUPER FALCONS’ WAFCON VICTORY OVER MOROCCO

Super Falcons coach, Justin Madugu, has disclosed that a crucial tactical change at halftime was the turning point in Nigeria’s dramatic comeback victory over hosts Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Speaking exclusively on Friday during a civic reception held in his honour in Numan, Adamawa State, Madugu explained that his original game plan faltered against Morocco’s setup, prompting him to make decisive changes that turned the tide of the match.
“I used the first half of the game to study their tactics,” Madugu said. “I discovered that Plan B was the only way forward if we wanted to win. After halftime, I made critical changes in midfield, bringing in a faster, more tactically aware midfielder who helped us dominate possession and push Morocco back.”
Nigeria came from two goals down to defeat the host nation 3-2, claiming their record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
Reflecting on the pressure of being behind at halftime, Madugu admitted: “It felt like there was no blood in my body again, but I said, for me to lose this match, Morocco must see fire on the pitch. Playing against a host country in the final is never easy, but the Super Falcons showed the heart of lions.”
During the event, the traditional ruler of the Bachama Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Dr. Daniel Shaga Ismaila (Hama Bachama), conferred a traditional title on Madugu, commending him for bringing honour to the kingdom and Nigeria. The monarch also encouraged Nigerian youths to embrace sports as a viable and rewarding career path.
In his remarks, Mr. Kwamoti Laori, the Member of the House of Representatives representing Numan, Demsa, and Lamurde federal constituency, called on the Nigeria Football Federation to confirm Madugu as the substantive head coach of the Super Falcons. He further urged the Ministry of Youth and Sports to upgrade sporting infrastructure nationwide to boost youth involvement in sports.
“Madugu can bring the World Cup to Nigeria if given the opportunity to lead the Super Falcons or even the Super Eagles,” Laori said.
Coach Madugu attended the reception alongside his wife.
