MORAYO BROWN LAMENTS ABUSIVE PHONE CALL OVER INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

Television host and media personality Morayo Brown has revealed that she received an abusive phone call from a woman who repeatedly cursed her over the questions she asks guests on her television programme.
Brown, host of The Morayo Show and former co-host of TVC’s Your View, disclosed the incident in a video shared on her Instagram page on Friday, describing the experience as disturbing and uncalled for.
According to the broadcaster, the caller subjected her to verbal abuse and used several “unprintable words” simply because of the nature of her interview style.
“I got a call from somebody who rained curses on me. She said, she said, she said, and so many other unprintable words,” Brown said.
The veteran presenter said she was surprised by the incident, noting that while she had become accustomed to criticism on social media over the years, she never expected someone to personally call her to hurl insults.
“I’ve been dragged on social media for many years for different reasons. So I don’t read those messages because it’s not my kind of thing. But for somebody to have the privilege of having my phone number and calling me and raining curses on me… what’s my sin? The kind of questions I ask guests or the names I call during my interviews?” she said.
Brown explained that some of the criticism stemmed from recent interviews in which she asked guests probing questions, including one about a person’s experience at a funeral.
Defending her interviewing style, she said her more than two decades in the media had equipped her with the experience and professionalism to ask difficult but relevant questions.
“I’ve been in the media for 21 years. I’ve been on television for 12 years, every single day, Monday to Friday, hosting a TV show. There are only a handful of Nigerians who have that experience.
“If there’s anybody in this country that has the right to ask anybody any kind of question, it is I. I’ve earned it,” she said.
Brown added that she would not shy away from asking challenging questions, regardless of the status of her guests.
“If Donald Trump comes here tomorrow, I will ask him whatever the heck I want to ask him,” she stated.
The broadcaster, however, stressed that she respects the boundaries set by her guests, explaining that some prefer to receive questions ahead of interviews, while others simply indicate topics they would rather avoid.
“I respect my guests. Some of them, I give them the questions and tell them what they want to answer. Others, I give them a scope. The people that I know I flow with, we flow. I don’t need to ask them any questions. I just say, ‘Don’t go to this area, don’t go to that area,’ and it’s fine,” she said.
Brown maintained that The Morayo Show was never intended to embarrass or attack guests but rather to entertain and inspire viewers.
“My show is not for criticising and bashing people. My show is a show where we give love and joy,” she said.
Expressing disappointment over the abusive phone call, the media personality insisted that asking questions is the core responsibility of every interviewer.
“It’s quite disheartening for somebody to call me and rain curses at me because I asked a question. It’s my job, for heaven’s sake, to ask questions. That’s my job,” she said.
Brown’s comments come amid discussions generated by some of her recent celebrity interviews, including veteran actress Ireti Doyle, who declined to discuss details of her divorce during an appearance on The Morayo Show, describing the issue as “none of your business.”
She has also drawn public attention in recent months for questions posed to actress Toyin Abraham regarding her reported rift with Funke Akindele, as well as during an interview with former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola.
