The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested two elderly men, aged 84 and 75, over their alleged involvement in supplying and selling illicit drugs to secondary school students in Umuahia, Abia State.

The suspects, identified as 84-year-old Godfrey Orji and 75-year-old Godwin Obulunbiya Obiora, were separately apprehended by NDLEA operatives during coordinated intelligence-led operations.

In a statement released on Sunday, the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, said Obiora was arrested on June 19 after intelligence linked him to the sale of illegal substances to students and other users from his patent medicine shop.

Babafemi explained that operatives recovered 4.64 kilograms of opioids, including tramadol and diazepam, during a search of the premises located at 4 Club Road, Umuahia.

In a separate incident, Orji, a pensioner, was arrested after being caught supplying illicit drugs to students of Saint Silas Secondary School, Old Umuahia.

According to Babafemi, school security personnel initially apprehended the suspect after he was found with two teenage students, before handing them over to the police, who later transferred the case to the NDLEA on June 18.

One of the students, a 15-year-old SS2 pupil, reportedly confessed during interrogation that the 84-year-old suspect regularly supplied him with drugs, which he also distributed to other students.

The NDLEA said both suspects would be prosecuted, while the students involved have been enrolled in counselling and rehabilitation programmes.

Meanwhile, the agency also announced several drug seizures and arrests across the country.

In Lagos, operatives intercepted 9.5 kilograms of ADB-Chminaca, a synthetic cannabinoid classified as a dangerous psychoactive substance, hidden in a shipment from China at a courier facility.

Another operation led to the seizure of 300 grams of “Loud,” a potent cannabis strain concealed in ladies’ handbags at a logistics company.

NDLEA officers also raided the residence of a wanted drug dealer, Lukman Badmus, popularly known as Lukman Ogombo, in the Ogombo area of Ajah, Lagos, recovering codeine syrup and cannabis.

A follow-up operation at his wife’s shop on Lagos Island led to additional recoveries, including codeine and large quantities of skunk, while further exhibits were found in a parked mini-bus. Attempts to dispose of evidence during the raid were reportedly foiled by operatives.

In Kogi State, a suspect was intercepted along the Okene–Lokoja highway with methamphetamine concealed in custard containers, while two wanted suspects linked to a previous cannabis seizure in Ekiti State were also arrested.

In Oyo State, three suspects were arrested during a raid that uncovered over 1,400 kilograms of skunk concealed in sacks covered with sawdust.

In Edo State, NDLEA operatives destroyed large cannabis farms and recovered several tons of processed and harvested cannabis during separate raids, while another suspect was arrested with nearly 400 kilograms of skunk.

Chairman and Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), commended officers involved in the operations across Abia, Lagos, Kogi, Oyo, and Edo States.

He urged personnel to remain steadfast in their efforts to curb drug trafficking and abuse while sustaining the agency’s nationwide sensitisation campaigns under the War Against Drug Abuse initiative.
