The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has begun distributing relief supplies to individuals and communities impacted by recent fire incidents across Cross River State.

NEMA’s Uyo Operations Office initiated the distribution of aid to those affected by the fire disasters in Goldie Market, Calabar South, Abama in Bakassi, and Nyaghasang in Calabar Municipality Local Government Areas.

The agency disclosed this in a statement on Facebook on Tuesday that the exercise was carried out in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

“The distribution exercise took place at the SEMA Warehouse in Calabar and was done in collaboration with the CR-SEMA, Nigerian Red Cross, LGA leaders, security personnel, the media, and other key stakeholders,” it stated.

The relief items comprised rice, garri, beans, vegetable oil, seasoning cubes, tomato paste, iodised salt, zinc nails, dignity packs, and bags of cement.

During the distribution, the Head of Operations, Mmandu Aisueni, expressed sympathy for the affected residents and urged them to use the items wisely.

“On behalf of the DG of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, [she] conveyed condolences to those impacted and encouraged them to make careful and beneficial use of the relief materials,” the statement noted.

She also encouraged beneficiaries to implement measures to prevent the impact of future disasters.

“She further urged beneficiaries to adopt proactive strategies, including Disaster Risk Reduction practices, to strengthen resilience against potential future incidents,” the statement added.

Beneficiaries at the event expressed gratitude for the support.

Speaking on their behalf, Ita Okon Nyong and Happiness James thanked the Federal Government and NEMA for their swift response, emphasizing that “the distributed items would provide essential relief and support to those affected by the disasters,” the statement concluded.

the media previously reported that Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, visited the site of a gas fire explosion in early March at Edibe Edibe, Calabar South, describing the incident as shocking and assuring victims of prompt government assistance.

The governor, after assessing the damage, lamented the extent of destruction, noting that both lives and property had been affected.
