OGUN RECORDS 161 FATALITIES IN 415 ROAD CRASHES — FRSC

Agency Report
The Federal Road Safety Corps, Ogun State Command, has disclosed that 161 people lost their lives in 415 road crashes recorded across the state between January and May 2026.
The command’s spokesperson, Mr. Afolabi Odunsi, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Ota, Ogun State.
According to Odunsi, a total of 1,007 people sustained varying degrees of injuries in the crashes during the five-month period.
He noted that the 415 crashes recorded in 2026 represent a decline of 79 compared to the 494 road traffic crashes recorded during the same period in 2025.
Odunsi also revealed that road crash fatalities dropped from 212 in the corresponding period of 2025 to 161 this year, while the number of injured persons decreased from 1,121 to 1,007.
He attributed the improvement to the command’s sustained public enlightenment campaigns, which have focused on educating motorists and other road users on safe driving practices.
Despite the reduction, Odunsi said traffic violations remain the leading causes of road crashes, citing speeding, drunk driving, dangerous overtaking, use of mobile phones while driving, overloading and tyre bursts among the major contributing factors.
He urged motorists to obey traffic rules and regulations to prevent avoidable road crashes and loss of lives.
The FRSC spokesperson reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property through stricter enforcement of traffic laws and continuous public awareness campaigns.
