The Marine Unit of the Ports Authority Police (Western Command) has arrested seven individuals allegedly involved in repeated attacks on international vessels within the Lagos Port Corridor.
This was disclosed on Friday in a statement by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Isaac Hundeyin.
According to Hundeyin, officers on routine waterfront patrol near the Ports & Terminal Multiservices Limited earlier in the week intercepted a suspicious speedboat positioned close to vessel CL YINGNA HE, which was berthed at Berth 12.
Initially, three persons were sighted on the boat. However, as officers approached, they discovered four additional suspects lying flat on the deck in an attempt to evade detection.
“The suspects were seen stretching a long bamboo pole with a steel curved hook toward the vessel, suggesting an attempt to gain unauthorised access,” Hundeyin said. “Upon questioning, none of the seven occupants could provide a credible explanation for their presence within the restricted port area.”
A search of the boat uncovered several incriminating items, including: One heavy iron cutter, Two saw blades, a long bamboo stick with steel curved hook, One long ship rope, 31 assorted spanners, Four screwdrivers, a plier, a plastic bucket, a speedboat with a 60HP Yamaha engine
Following their arrest, the suspects were handed over to the Port Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation. Hundeyin noted that their method matched patterns linked to previous attacks on foreign vessels.
All seven suspects were subsequently arraigned in court on 20 November 2025.
The Commissioner of Police, Ports Authority Police (Western Command), Oluwatoyin Agbaminoja, assured maritime stakeholders of the command’s “unwavering commitment” to eliminating criminal activity in Nigerian ports. She said patrols and intelligence operations would be intensified, with enhanced interagency collaboration to maintain a safe and business-friendly maritime environment.
The Ports Authority Police is responsible for security within Nigeria’s ports, with the Marine Unit of the Western Command overseeing waterfront patrols and offshore security operations of up to 12 nautical miles in Lagos, in partnership with the Nigerian Ports Authority’s security division.
