The Kebbi State Police Command has cautioned civil society groups and organisations against staging protests over the abduction of students from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, warning that the current security situation is not conducive to public demonstrations.

In a statement released on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Nafiu Kotarkoshi, disclosed that intelligence reports indicated that some groups and NGOs were mobilising to hold a protest “any moment from today.”

He said while the command empathises with the affected families and the public, organising demonstrations at this time could escalate tension and interfere with ongoing efforts to rescue the abducted students.

“The current situation is dicey for any protest or rally to hold, as it has the potential of instigating violence in the state,” Kotarkoshi said. “While we remain deeply concerned about the regrettable incident, it is misguided and counterproductive for any protest to hold, as it will undermine the unwavering commitment of the combined security team working tirelessly to rescue the kidnapped schoolgirls unhurt.”

The command assured residents of its dedication to maintaining security and confirmed that security agencies are intensifying efforts to safely recover the schoolgirls.

Kotarkoshi urged members of the public to remain calm and support security operations by reporting any suspicious movement or individuals to the nearest police station.

The students were abducted earlier in the week when armed attackers stormed the school in Danko-Wasagu, an incident that has sparked nationwide concern and renewed pressure on authorities to strengthen security measures in schools across Nigeria’s North-West region.
