The Oyo State Police Command has dismissed rumours alleging the movement of terrorists into Ogbomoso, Oyo State, while warning against the spread of unverified security information.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, stated this in a release issued on Wednesday in Ibadan.
He was responding to a viral video and voice note circulating on social media, which claimed that suspected Lukarawa terrorists had infiltrated forests around Ogbomoso and the Old Oyo National Park.
The statement described the claims as false, misleading, and without any factual basis, stressing that intelligence reports do not indicate any terrorist presence or movement in the area.
According to the Command, ongoing security assessments and intelligence gathering have not shown any evidence supporting the viral claims.
Despite dismissing the report, the police said they have intensified security operations across the state, including deploying intelligence and covert operatives to border communities and vulnerable areas.
It added that these operatives are working alongside local security outfits, community intelligence networks, traditional rulers, hunters, and vigilante groups to enhance surveillance and rapid response capabilities.
The Command also said it has increased visibility policing, patrols, stop-and-search operations, and strategic deployments across Ogbomoso, the Old Oyo National Park axis, and surrounding communities to maintain peace and reassure residents.
Residents, especially those in rural and border areas, were urged to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activity to security agencies.
The police expressed concern over the rising spread of fake news and unverified security alerts on social media, noting that such misinformation can cause panic, disrupt public order, and divert security resources.
It warned that spreading false information is a punishable offence under the law and that individuals responsible for circulating misleading content would be investigated and prosecuted.
The Command reaffirmed that there is no credible intelligence indicating any terrorist infiltration in Oyo State and advised the public to ignore the viral video and voice note.
It urged residents to rely only on official communication channels and continue their daily activities without fear, assuring that the state remains safe and under effective security surveillance.
