A viral video showing a group of so-called area boys punishing secondary school students for allegedly going to school late has triggered widespread reactions and debate across social media in Nigeria.

In the footage, which surfaced online on Tuesday, the students are seen kneeling by the roadside with their hands raised, while one of the men stands over them holding a cane. A voice in the background can be heard reprimanding the students for leaving home late, saying, “Look at the time you’re going to school.”

The incident, believed to have occurred in Lagos, has sparked intense conversations around discipline, authority, child protection and public safety.

While some Nigerians applauded the action, describing it as a reflection of lost communal values, others condemned it as unlawful and dangerous. A social media user, Maiyegun Quam, argued that society once played a collective role in raising children, suggesting that the punishment reflected a return to shared responsibility.

Another commenter, Desmond Arnold, reacted sarcastically, stating that the area boys had “done one good thing,” while @Akinjoshua2017 blamed schools for allegedly no longer enforcing discipline, claiming this encouraged lateness among students.

However, a significant number of Nigerians strongly criticised the incident, warning that it amounted to vigilantism and abuse. @Samnacks_201 described the act as assault, stressing that discipline without proper authority was unacceptable, while @lagosconvo noted that the individuals involved had no legal or moral right to punish the students.

Others questioned the logic of the action, pointing out that detaining and punishing the students only delayed them further from getting to school.

The incident has reignited an ongoing national conversation about the role of parents, schools and communities in disciplining children, as well as the dangers of informal and unauthorised enforcement of social rules.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement from the Lagos State Government or security agencies regarding the video or the identity of those involved.
