IKEJA ELECTRIC DISCONNECTS COMMUNITY OVER REFUSAL TO PAY ESTIMATED BILLS?

Read Time:2 Minute, 45 Second

Residents of Ketu-Ikosi have been plunged into darkness by the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) over estimated billings’ protest that was carried out by the community recently.
The community, who have chosen to go the ‘No Prepaid Meter, No Payment’ slogan posters to drive home their point of over-estimated billings and indistinctly disconnection being carried out by the IKEDC staff around the neighborhood for some time now. It was gathered by our correspondent, that the disconnection was done to the area as retaliation over the protest carried out by the community for the request of Prepaid Meter to be installed to every household around the area.
The Prepaid Meter which has been instructed by the Minister for Power, Works and Housing, Mr Raji Fashola to be given out to every consumer at no cost over some months ago is yet to be carried out by the company to the residents of the area as of when visited by our team.
Our correspondent, who visited the area, spoke to some of the residents of the area concerning the issue and they expressed their disappointment over the lingering battle with IKEDC over estimated billings.
Mr Olawale, who resides at Jimoh Balogun Street confirmed to us that the IKEDC disconnected power to the area since Monday, December 10. And he was adamant that this  was due as a result of the running battle with IKEDC over estimated billing and the request for Prepaid meter to be installed all over the community.
Another resident of the community, Mr John, who resides on Ajagungbade Street expressed his anger over the issue and called the attention of the IKEDC to the suffering which they’ve been subjected to by their staff and he called for immediate restoration of power to the area. He also pleaded to the Lagos State Government to intervene in the rigmarole between the community and the company.
Mr Gaffar, who also resides around the affected areas spoke passionately about the extortion and indiscriminately disconnection carried out by the IKEDC over the area has been on for a very long time. He said “We’ve requested for Prepaid Meter from IKEDC for a very long time. Other area around the neighborhood have been installed with the same Prepaid meter we so much clamored for. Areas like Aladelola, Ikosi Road, Oluyombo to mention a few have been using prepaid meter over a year now while we are left out deliberately by IKEDC. We enjoined the company to yield to our request.”
It was gathered by our correspondent that the electricity billings around the area is on the high side due to over-estimated billing which has been going on for a long time. A 3- Bedroom residential flat around the area gets #15,000 electricity bill per month.
A call was put through to the IKEDC Center by our reporter to make more findings about the issue regarding the community. The official who spoke to our correspondent denied the allegation levelled against the company by the community and also reiterate that the company is doing everything possible to see to the distribution of prepaid meter to the area soonest.
