The Ogun State Police Command says its operatives on Tuesday stormed the hideout of suspected kidnappers in the forest of Fidiwo, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, and shot dead six of them during an exchange of gunfire.
Two operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad were also said to have sustained gunshot wounds in the bloody encounter.
The command said the slain suspects had been on the wanted list for almost a year as a result of their alleged nefarious activities along the ever busy expressway.
They were said to have even sacked a whole village in that axis, and turned it into their hideout.
From their hideout, they also allegedly moved to the highway to rob motorists and other travellers.
The state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, who led journalists to the hideout,
said the suspects had earlier kidnapped two medical doctors at the University College Teaching Hospital, Ibadan, who were heading to Lagos for a programme.
He said the doctors were later rescued by operatives of Federal Anti-Robbery Squad.
The audacity of the suspects, he said, infuriated him, and he then ordered the officer in-charge of FSARS, Uba Adam, to go after them.
He said, “There was a criminal gang that had festered around this thick forest, operating between Onigari, Fidiwo and Saapade. They made this area a criminal den.
“They operated in a sort of guerrilla tactics; they moved on to the highway, attacked, decapitated vehicles and individuals, robbed them and took them hostage.
“They used these buildings in the heart of this thick forest, where they kept their victims and demanded ransom.
“As a result of painstaking effort, dedication, and professionalism of the men of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad through technical intelligence, we were able to discover their den and war was taken into this area early this morning.”
Iliyasu commended the gallantry of the FSARS, said two police men got injured in the gun battle.
He said, “Today, I commend the dedication and professionalism of our men of the FSARS that were deployed to this forest based on technical intelligence, and were able to crush these elements.
“This is a gang that we have been working on for more than one year; we have been gathering information about their movement.
“They (kidnappers) knew their route very well and they moved from here to anywhere; to Ondo, Ibadan, Abeokuta even Lagos.
“We vowed that we must get this gang, and in view of that, in the early hours of today (Tuesday), our men used their professionalism, and there was a gun battle between them. Two of our men were wounded but they are safe, they are receiving treatment.”
Iliyasu, who praised the gallantry of his men, warned that the state would never be a safe haven for any criminal.
He assured members of the public of adequate security, saying the command will continue to work “to make good and law abiding citizens of the state sleep with their two eyes closed.”
