After experiencing his first success in the race on Saturday, Kenyan runner, Bernard Sang, the 2024 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon winner, promised to repeat the feat again the following year.

The 32-year-old won the 42-kilometer race and the $30,000 reward money by clocking a time of 02:16:49, besting about 80 other competitors.

He was taking part in the race for the fourth time.

Two other Kenyans, Simon Cheprot and Edwin Kiptoo, placed second and third respectively, earning cash prizes of $40,000 and $30,000, demonstrating the dominance of East Africans in the race.

The Kenyans won the marathon in 2016, 2017, 2020 and 2021.

“I feel very happy winning this Lagos Marathon because it’s a very great event. This is my fourth time running and I’m happy to have won this after three attempts,” Sang said after the race.

“I was number eight in the previous ones and the last time, I was number three. I was not expecting to be a winner this year.

“I feel really strong now and I’m coming back again next year,” he added.

Also, 25-year-old Ethiopian, Kebene Chala, was the first woman to cross the finish line.

Shehu Muazu was the first Nigerian to cross the finish line and won a N1m cash prize.

The 42km race, which was scheduled between 5am and 2pm began at the National Stadium in Surulere and ended at the Eko Atlantic City in Victoria Island.

The Lagos State Government, through the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, on Friday, issued a traffic advisory ahead of the yearly Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.
