Sandirde hamlet, in Taraba state’s Gassol local government region, is home to an ambush that resulted in the confirmed death of a police officer by a local vigilante group.

In a press release on Wednesday, the Taraba State Police Command—through its Commissioner, David Iloyanomon—confirmed this occurrence.

The Commissioner claims that on May 4, 2024, while on a regular patrol near Sandirde, a squad of special strike force agents attached to the Government House in Taraba was ambushed by a vigilante group.

The statement adds that the vigilante group shot sporadically, resulting in one “AP/NO 191462 ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT TAPU GODFREY”, being shot in his lap.

SP Jamu Emmanuel commanded the ambushed policemen. Shortly after the attack, a group of Gassol division detectives under the command of the DCO raced to the scene and brought the victim to General Hospital Sandirde, where the medical staff pronounced him dead.

The following day, a fact-finding trip to Gassol was undertaken by the state commissioner of police, who also visited with stakeholders. The deputy commissioner was in charge of operations and personnel at 40PMF Jalingo.

The communiqué stated that the meeting’s conclusions included how to apprehend the attackers and create a plan for amiable security inside the local administration.

The police used intelligence and operational resources to continue the manhunt of the escaping attackers and bring them to justice since they viewed the unprovoked criminal act as heinous and unjustified.

Nonetheless, the state police leadership offered consolation to the officer’s friends and family and assured the public that every effort would be made to combat crime and criminality.
