EMMANUEL KUNDE, LINCHPIN OF CAMEROON’S 1990 WORLD CUP TEAM, DIES AGED 68
By Aishat Momoh. O.
The Cameroonian football association announced on Friday the death of Emmanuel Kunde, a key member of the 1990 squad that advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals, the first African team to do so.
Kunde, 68, was a member of the victorious squad when the Indomitable Lions won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1984 and 1988. He also participated in the 1982 World Cup in Spain, where Cameroon made its debut.
He scored from the penalty spot in the dramatic 3-2 loss to England in Naples during the 1990 World Cup final eight, and he also took the penalty that determined the outcome of the 1988 Cup of Nations final against Nigeria in Casablanca.
“His death constitutes a huge loss for Cameroonian football,” said a federation statement.
