The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the death of one person and injuries to five others following a deadly explosion at the Eke Ubaheze Market Square in Awo-Idemili, Orsu Local Government Area.

The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday when a middle-aged woman, identified as Ngozi Umeh, reportedly stepped on an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), suspected to have been planted by members of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

Police reports indicated that Umeh sustained critical injuries and later died in hospital. Five other individuals also suffered varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.

In response, Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, swiftly deployed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit and tactical teams to the scene. The area has since been declared safe following a security sweep, and market activities have resumed under heightened surveillance.

Danjuma further ordered the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to lead a full-scale investigation aimed at identifying and bringing those responsible to justice.

The police commissioner extended his condolences to the victim’s family and assured the people of Orsu and Imo State at large of the Command’s unrelenting efforts to rid the region of criminal elements.
