The Sokoto State Government has declared Thursday, June 26, 2025, as a public holiday to commemorate the beginning of the Islamic New Year, 1st Muharram, 1447 AH.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Press Secretary to the Governor, Abubakar Bawa, the state government said the holiday will allow Muslim faithful across the state to celebrate the commencement of the new Hijrah calendar year.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu, in his message to the people, urged citizens to take the occasion as a time for spiritual reflection, self-assessment, and personal growth.
“We should use the beginning of this new Islamic calendar year for sober reflection and self-assessment—to recognise where we have done well and strive for improvement, and where we have fallen short, to make amends,” the governor said.
He emphasised the importance of embracing the core values of piety, humility, and accountability and called on Muslims to reconnect with the moral and spiritual lessons of the Hijrah.
Governor Aliyu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting Islamic values and supporting religious propagation throughout Sokoto State. He extended heartfelt wishes to the Muslim Ummah for a peaceful and fulfilling new year.
Islamic clerics and religious groups across the state are expected to organise special prayers and sermons to mark the beginning of the new year.
