The Lagos State Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the state government to increase the minimum wage for workers from the current N85,000 to 150,000, citing the rising cost of living in the state.

Chairperson of the Lagos NLC, Mrs. Funmi Sesi, made the demand on Thursday while reacting to the recent wage increases announced by the governments of Imo and Ebonyi States.

Sesi noted that Lagos workers face higher expenses on accommodation, transportation, feeding, and utilities compared to their counterparts in other states, stressing that wages should reflect the economic realities of the state.

“The time has come for an upward review of minimum wage in Lagos. At least someone has taken the bull by the horns and opened the space. No one can blame Governor Sanwo-Olu now if he implements a higher wage for Lagos workers, because we deserve a better wage and decent work conditions,” she said.

She welcomed the decision of Imo and Ebonyi governments to raise wages, describing it as a positive step for the Nigerian workforce and urging other states to follow suit.

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State earlier this week approved a new minimum wage of N104,000 for civil servants, up from N76,000. Similarly, the Ebonyi State Government increased its minimum wage from a N70,000 to N90,000, according to the state’s Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Chief Ikeuwa Omebe.

Sesi added that the Lagos NLC looks forward to engaging the state government on an improved welfare package for its workers.
