The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has called on Nigerians to uphold and safeguard government facilities within their local communities. While inaugurating projects in the Ika Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Akpabio stated, “My responsibility as your representative in the Senate is to ensure that I deliver projects that you request for the collective benefit of the populace. As the recipients of these projects, you have an obligation to protect the facilities to prevent them from being vandalized or destroyed by adversaries of progress. In essence, I wish for communities to take ownership of these initiatives, thereby motivating government at all levels to enhance their efforts further. ”

The injured officer was reportedly transported to the Gombe Specialist Hospital for urgent medical attention, but tragically succumbed to the gunshot wound.

In a statement on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Ahmed Wakil, described the online accounts as “misleading, misrepresenting the facts of the incident, and failing to accurately portray what actually transpired.”

The police disclosed that preliminary investigations revealed that the truck belonged to Guruje Mining Company Limited and ZURFI Company Limited, both of which hold valid licences to extract lead and zinc minerals in Gwana, Alkaleri LGA.

“These companies have complied with all mining operational protocols of the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act of 2007 and possess a certificate of incorporation pursuant to the Companies and Allied Matters Act of 2020,” the police clarified.

The command further clarified that mobile law enforcement officers assigned to the mining companies were officially deployed to ensure the safety of expatriate personnel and facilitate various operations.

The announcement indicated that the inspector purportedly involved in the shooting was among those designated for this responsibility.

It also revealed that the companies had “effectively extracted a significant volume of lead and zinc minerals earmarked for export, with applicable fees remitted as revenue to the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, cited by RRR code 3212-7561-4841. ”

To investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, the command stated it had established “a specialized investigative unit of seasoned detectives in partnership with the Nigerian Army Military Police, which has been assigned to gather and evaluate all pertinent information concerning the remote and immediate causes of this unfortunate event. ”

The police assured that the inquiry would “adhere to all professional standards and thorough procedures to conduct a credible, evidence-based investigation, eliminate ambiguities, and ensure that justice is served through a meticulous examination of all the facts. ”

The statement also warned against sensationalized reporting of the incident, emphasizing that “a life has been lost,” and urged bloggers to refrain from “narratives that could undermine the collaborative efforts among security agencies operating within the state. ”

While commiserating with the Nigerian Army, the state Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, said, “The command, and indeed the entire officers and men, extend our deepest condolences to the Commander, 33 Artillery Brigade, Bauchi, and to the family and loved ones of the deceased officer.”

The command urged the public to disregard misinformation and rely only on official channels for accurate updates.
