The Lagos State Police Command on Monday swiftly restored normalcy on the 3rd Mainland Bridge after residents of Oworonshoki staged a protest at the Iyana Oworo axis over recent demolitions in their community.

The demonstration, which began in the morning, saw protesters blocking the section of the bridge connecting the Island to the Mainland, causing a major gridlock. Several commuters, including individuals reportedly in need of urgent medical care, were trapped in the standstill.

Upon receiving reports, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, led detachments of the Mobile Police Force, Tactical Units, and other operatives to the scene to de-escalate the situation.

According to a statement issued by the Command, CP Jimoh personally engaged with the protesters in an attempt to hear their grievances and persuade them to vacate the bridge. However, the protesters refused to disperse, maintaining their blockade.

In the interest of public safety, the Police said minimal force was applied to disperse the demonstrators. Barricades were dismantled, traffic obstructions were cleared, and the free flow of vehicles was restored. Authorities confirmed that the exercise was carried out without any loss of life.

The Command reaffirmed its neutrality and commitment to safeguarding lives and property while urging residents to explore lawful channels for expressing grievances.

“The Lagos State Police Command reassures the public of its unwavering dedication to maintaining peace and order while protecting the rights of all citizens,” the statement read.
