The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, stated on Wednesday that the ministry is examining the altercation involving the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and a naval officer, A. M. Yerima, concerning a contested parcel of land in Abuja.

During a press conference to inaugurate activities for the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day at the National Defence College, Abuja, Badaru affirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to safeguarding personnel engaged in lawful duties.

He remarked, “At the ministry, and indeed within the Armed Forces, we will consistently defend our officers performing lawful responsibilities.

“We are investigating this matter, and we assure everyone that any officer on lawful duty will receive utmost protection. We will not permit any harm to come to him as long as he is fulfilling his responsibilities competently. ”

The media had reported that the altercation transpired on Tuesday when Wike visited the location and accused the military of unlawfully seizing the land.

In a recorded message obtained by our reporter, the visibly agitated minister questioned the presence of armed forces on the property, allegedly belonging to a former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Zubairu Gambo (retd. ).

Furthermore, Badaru utilized the briefing to introduce new initiatives aimed at enhancing military operations, veteran welfare, and national security.

He announced the Federal Government’s commencement of a program titled “Reclaiming the Ungoverned Space for Economic Benefits Programme (RUSEB-P),” which will deploy retired, yet agile military veterans to assist in securing and rehabilitating areas previously controlled by terrorists.

“By engaging veterans to bolster local security and initiate projects such as agriculture and mining, RUSEB-P will deter the resurgence of terrorism, rejuvenate local economies, and reinforce national security and unity,” he stated.

The minister also unveiled the “Thank A Soldier” QR Code, enabling Nigerians at home and abroad to send personalized messages of gratitude to troops deployed on the frontlines.

Regarding ongoing military operations nationwide, Badaru reported that troops under President Bola Tinubu’s administration have neutralized over 13,000 terrorists and criminals, apprehended more than 17,000 suspects, rescued nearly 10,000 hostages, and dismantled 1,900 illegal refining sites.

He added that over 100,000 Boko Haram/ISWAP fighters and their families have surrendered.

Addressing veterans’ welfare, he disclosed that the ministry is establishing a Veterans’ Databank and Call Centre and has enrolled 2,141 Civil War veterans who previously did not meet the criteria for pension benefits.

The government also intends to amend the Nigerian Legion Act and rebrand it as the Veterans Federation of Nigeria (VFN).

Badaru noted that Defence Health Maintenance Limited now covers more than 400,000 enrollees, including 205,000 veterans and their families across the nation.

He urged Nigerians to express their appreciation to troops and fallen heroes.

“We must continue to honor the courageous men and women who exemplify valor, discipline, and unity — the cornerstones of our democracy and sovereignty. ”
