SIX DIE IN GHANA MILITARY RECRUITMENT STAMPEDE

At least six individuals perished on Wednesday following a stampede during a military recruitment event at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra, Ghana.

A statement issued by the Acting Director-General of the Ghana Armed Forces Public Relations Directorate, Colonel Evelyn Asamoah, verified that the occurrence led to the demise of six prospective recruits, while numerous others incurred injuries.

Footage disseminated on social media depicted extensive lines forming on adjacent streets, as candidates reportedly arrived as early as 2 AM to queue for the recruitment event.

Asamoah indicated that the stampede transpired early in the morning when a substantial crowd of applicants disregarded security measures and surged through the stadium gates ahead of the prearranged screening.

The statement, shared on the Force’s official X platform, noted, “The Ghana Armed Forces profoundly regrets to inform the public of a tragic stampede prior to the initiation of the 2025/2026 recruitment exercise today, Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at the El-Wak Sports Stadium, Accra.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that the stampede was instigated by an unforeseen influx of applicants who violated security protocols and rushed through the gates before the scheduled screening at approximately 0620 hours. ”

Asamoah further stated that investigations are ongoing, while medical personnel have been dispatched to assist the injured.

“This unfortunate incident resulted in the death of six potential recruits, with many others injured. The injured individuals are currently receiving emergency medical treatment at the 37 Military Hospital.

“The Ghana Armed Forces assures the public that medical teams are diligently working to stabilize those affected. Concurrently, arrangements are being made to inform the families of the deceased.

“The Ghana Armed Forces extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes a swift recovery for those injured. Further updates will be provided,” the Public Relations Officer added.
