NORTHERN GOVERNORS CONDEMN KEBBI SCHOOL ATTACK, DEMAND URGENT RESCUE OF ABDUCTED STUDENTS

The Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) has strongly condemned the attack on Government Girls’ Comprehensive Senior Secondary School, Maga, in the Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, where several students were abducted and some officials reportedly killed.
The assault, carried out by armed bandits, marks yet another disturbing episode in the ongoing wave of attacks on schools in north-western Nigeria. Kebbi and neighbouring states have witnessed repeated incidents of mass kidnappings and violence, heightening fear and undermining educational stability in the region.
In a statement signed by his spokesperson, Ismaila Misilli, the Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Yahaya, described the incident as “tragic, senseless and utterly unacceptable.” He warned that the persistent targeting of schools threatens the region’s security and Nigeria’s educational future.
Yahaya extended the Forum’s condolences to the government and people of Kebbi State, especially the families of the abducted students and those who lost their loved ones. He also expressed solidarity with Governor Nasir Idris, assuring him of the Forum’s support during this difficult period.
“Schools must be sanctuaries of learning, not targets of violence,” Yahaya said, stressing that the attacks risk reversing gains in school enrolment and efforts to reduce the out-of-school population. He voiced deep concern for the wellbeing of the abducted schoolgirls, urging security agencies to launch an immediate and coordinated rescue operation and to ensure the perpetrators are apprehended.
Reaffirming the NSGF’s commitment to collaborate with the Federal Government and security agencies, Yahaya emphasized that the safety, education and welfare of young Nigerians remain top priorities for northern governors.
He prayed for the safe return of the abducted students and called on communities to remain vigilant and support security forces working to eradicate criminality across the region.
