A newborn baby has been found alive inside a bag at a shop along Pope John Paul Seminary School Street, Umuodu Village, Okpuno, in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The baby was reportedly discovered at about 9:00 a.m. on Sunday by a nurse, Mercy Iloanya, who said she heard cries coming from a bag placed in front of a nearby shop as she arrived at her workplace.

“I immediately called the attention of a man I saw along the street, who confirmed that the baby was alive before we alerted the woman whose shop the baby was dropped in front of,” Iloanya said.

According to her, when the shop owner arrived, they opened the bag and found a handwritten note allegedly from the baby’s mother, appealing to the shop owner to help take care of the child.

The discovery attracted residents and passersby, with several good Samaritans donating baby items on the spot. Many onlookers, mostly women, expressed shock and concern over the incident.

The baby was subsequently taken to the Anambra State Police Command, B Division, where the case was formally documented. Following police procedures, the infant was later transferred to the Intensive Care Unit of the Mother and Child Department at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka.

The move was carried out on the directive of the Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs Ify Obinabo, to ensure the child receives immediate medical attention and protection.
