GUNMEN ATTACK AMAECHI’S CONVOY IN RIVERS

On Friday, the convoy carrying Rotimi Amaechi, the former transportation minister, was attacked along the Ubima-Omuanwa road in Ikwerre Local Government Area, Rivers state.
The former governor of Rivers was traveling to officially join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) at his local ward in Ubima when the attack happened. Gunmen tried to attack Amaechi’s group of vehicles but were stopped by the security people working with the former minister.
On Friday, some people who haven’t been identified yet set fire to parts of the ADC office in Ubima and also attacked the house where Amaechi’s family lives.
After signing up for the ADC digital register, the former minister praised the security agencies for stopping the attack on his vehicle.
He also asked the security forces to catch the attackers and make sure they get proper justice.
Amaechi cautioned ADC supporters against reprisal, saying the attackers cannot stop him from engaging with party members.
“Our role is to be calm, be peaceful. We are marching to Aso Rock. What they are doing is a distraction. What they are doing will not put food on your table,” he said.
“Tell them we are hungry. People are dropping dead every day because of hunger, and a few people are stealing our money, and they say we should keep quiet. We can no longer keep quiet.”
Amaechi asked the people of Rivers to register as ADC members to be able to vote for him during the primary election.
Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson of the Rivers police command, did not respond to calls and text messages seeking comment on the attack on Amaechi’s convoy.
