A female passenger has died, and six others sustained serious injuries in a road accident at New Castle Bus Stop, Gbagada, along the Oworonsoki-Apapa Expressway in Lagos.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday, noting that it occurred over the weekend. The crash involved a Volkswagen commercial bus (registration LSD 654 XY) that reportedly veered off the road and collided with a roadside culvert.
The force of the impact ejected a female passenger onto the expressway, where an oncoming articulated trailer was unable to stop in time, running over her and causing instant death.

Taofiq said, “Reports indicate that a Volkswagen commercial bus (LSD 654 XY) lost control and slammed into a roadside culvert, forcefully ejecting a female passenger onto the roadway. Tragically, an approaching articulated trailer could not avoid the passenger, leading to her immediate death.”
Six other bus occupants, including the driver, suffered varying degrees of injuries, with some sustaining multiple fractures.
LASTMA officials secured the accident scene to prevent further collisions and assist emergency response teams. The Lagos State Ambulance Service transported the injured to a nearby hospital, while the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit removed the deceased from the scene.
Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, extended condolences to the deceased’s family and wished the injured a speedy recovery. He also urged motorists and commercial drivers to maintain their vehicles, particularly braking systems, to reduce preventable accidents.
