The Police Service Commission (PSC) has rejected claims that senior police officers paid N5 million each to secure promotion to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).

Sahara Reporters had alleged that officers bribed commission officials to advance from Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) to ACP.

In a statement on Sunday in Abuja, the PSC’s Head of Protocol and Public Affairs, Torty Kalu, dismissed the allegations as baseless and a reckless attempt to damage the reputations of both the commission and the Nigeria Police Force.

The commission also indicated it is considering legal action against Sahara Reporters for defamation.

“The commission notes with grave concern a publication alleging that senior officers paid N5 million each for promotion to ACP. We categorically deny these claims and describe the report as a reckless attempt to tarnish the image of the PSC and the Nigeria Police Force,” the statement read.

The PSC emphasized that promotions from CSP to ACP are conducted strictly according to established guidelines. It noted that the mention of the immediate past Inspector General of Police in the report was misleading, as the IGP’s role is limited to forwarding recommendations, with final approval resting solely with the commission.

The PSC urged the public to disregard the report and reaffirmed its commitment to merit-based promotions and proper oversight of the Nigeria Police Force.
