Amid rising insecurity marked by attacks on military personnel and civilians in recent weeks, Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd), convened a meeting with all service chiefs in Abuja on Wednesday to assess ongoing military operations across the country.
The meeting followed the murder of Zaki Sughter Agamber, the traditional ruler of Mbajiir in Tongov, Katsina-Ala LGA of Benue State, by armed assailants.
In response to rising violence, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa announced new measures to curb abductions and killings, including a ban on motorcycle operations at night and restrictions on cart pushing in key areas.
The House of Representatives also expressed deep concern over the wave of kidnappings and violent attacks in Ekiti State, especially in Ekiti North I (Ikole/Oye) federal constituency, while the Senate urged the military to intensify counter-insurgency efforts in the North-East, emphasizing enhanced intelligence, surveillance, and operational readiness to restore security nationwide.

Those attending the defence minister’s meeting included Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, Chief of Army Staff Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Idi Abass, and representatives from the National Intelligence Agency, among others.
Recent weeks have seen coordinated attacks by terrorists on military bases, resulting in the deaths of soldiers and commanding officers.
After the strategy meeting, General Musa assured Nigerians that the military remains committed to securing the nation. He said the discussions were aimed at reviewing ongoing operations across all theatres of conflict.
“We had a short meeting with the service chiefs to review strategies across the country. We are fully aware of the issues on the ground, but I assure Nigerians that the armed forces are working tirelessly to maintain security,” Musa said.
Acknowledging casualties among troops, he emphasized that terrorists are sustaining even heavier losses. “We have suffered some casualties, but the terrorists are losing more. We are taking out their commanders and assets, and this will continue,” he added.
The defence minister cautioned against misinformation on social media, noting it could demoralize the troops, and urged citizens to support security agencies by providing credible intelligence and reporting suspicious activities.
