Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, said his team was unsettled by Bayer Leverkusen’s goal as the two sides played out a 1–1 draw in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 clash on Wednesday night.

Robert Andrich gave the hosts the lead from a corner kick, but a late penalty from Kai Havertz ensured Arsenal salvaged a draw.

The result ended Arsenal’s perfect run in the competition heading into the second leg.

Mikel Arteta said the match went through several phases and that Arsenal lost control after conceding to Bayer Leverkusen.

“The game had different moments. We began quite strongly, but once they scored the match changed completely,” he said.

“In the second half we had to remain calm, control our emotions, and stay very composed.

“Eventually we managed to find a way back and get the equaliser.

“Football always produces interesting and unexpected stories. I was really impressed by how calm Kai Havertz was when he stepped up to take the penalty.”
