Operatives of the Imo State Police Command have apprehended two suspected armed robbers and recovered a pistol along with seven rounds of live ammunition after responding swiftly to a distress call in Owerri.

According to a press statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, the suspects—Solomon Ejekwe, 29, from Ubaha Orodo in Mbaitoli Local Government Area, and Emeka Charles, 35, from Umuopara Ngugo in Ikeduru Local Government Area—were arrested by officers from the Orji Divisional Headquarters working in collaboration with the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit.

Okoye explained that the arrests followed a distress call from residents who reported an armed robbery incident in the Aladinma area of Owerri. Acting quickly on the information, police operatives mobilised to the location and successfully apprehended the suspects.

He disclosed that preliminary investigations revealed that the victim was washing his car at a car wash located in the Mangrove area of Aladinma when the suspects approached him, pointed a gun at him, and robbed him of his gold chain before fleeing the scene on a motorcycle.

“The victim, however, chased the suspects with his vehicle and managed to knock them down. They were later subdued and assaulted by an angry mob before police operatives arrived at the scene and took them into custody.

“The suspects have been taken to the police medical centre for treatment and will be charged to court on the appropriate criminal offences as soon as possible,” Okoye added.

Reacting to the incident, the State Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, praised the swift response of the operatives as well as the cooperation of members of the public, but cautioned residents against engaging in mob action and jungle justice.

He advised the public to always allow the law to take its proper course.
