A tragic incident occurred in Sokoto State on Thursday evening after a passenger boat capsized in Shagari Local Government Area, leaving several people feared dead.

The mishap, which has cast a shadow of grief over riverine communities, marks the third boat accident in the state within the past month.

Confirming the development, the Special Adviser to Governor Ahmed Aliyu on the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Aminu Liman Bodinga, disclosed that rescue teams from SEMA, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) have been mobilised to the site.

Eyewitnesses reported that the vessel, laden with numerous passengers, overturned and threw everyone onboard into the river.

While the exact number of casualties is yet to be verified, local accounts suggest that many lives may have been lost.

Boat mishaps have become frequent in Sokoto, with experts attributing the tragedies to weak safety enforcement, the absence of life jackets, and reliance on non-motorised boats.

Residents are once again urging authorities to provide safer transport options, enforce safety regulations, and ensure adequate life-saving equipment to avert further tragedies.

The state government, working with federal agencies, is expected to release a formal statement once rescue operations are completed. Meanwhile, tension grips Shagari and neighbouring communities as families anxiously await news of their missing loved ones.
