A former captain of the Super Eagles, Mikel Obi, has advocated for the dissolution of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) if the nation fails to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

Nigeria necessitates a remarkable turnaround to advance in the forthcoming World Cup after drawing South Africa in the Group C qualification series for the tournament.

This outcome positions the Eagles in third place, trailing the Bafana Bafana by six points with only two matches remaining.

Mikel asserts that the nation’s difficulties in the World Cup qualifying campaign stem from the football governing body’s failure to organize itself properly.

“If Nigeria does not qualify for the World Cup, the entire NFF board must resign… it is intolerable,” remarked the former Chelsea player on the Obi One Podcast.

“We failed to qualify for Qatar the last World Cup and now it appears we may not succeed again. Frankly, I have no further comments on this,” the former midfielder stated.

“It is simply disheartening. Should we blame the players? No, I do not attribute the fault solely to them. While players must accept some responsibility for the circumstances, can we solely hold them accountable? No.

“We have discussed this numerous times, and that is why some individuals show disrespect towards the African continent and its football.

Mikel contends that those in charge of football in Nigeria should be held “responsible” for the country’s dismal performance in the qualifiers.
