At least four shops were destroyed in a midnight fire on Friday at Saki Motor Park, opposite Trans Amusement Park, Bodija, in the Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Eyewitnesses said the incident, which occurred around 2:00 am, was caused by embers left unattended after shop closure. The flames spread rapidly, gutting four out of 11 shops before firefighters arrived.
No lives were lost, but property and goods worth millions of naira were destroyed.
Confirming the incident, the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, said the fire was reported at exactly 2:07 am.
“The fire personnel led by ACFS Adedeji (Mrs) swiftly responded and curtailed the spread to nearby shops and buildings. The blaze was completely extinguished,” Akinwande stated.
He explained that the fire was triggered by lighted embers that ignited nearby combustibles, adding that quick intervention saved other shops and property worth millions of naira.
Akinwande, who also serves as Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Reform, urged residents to be more safety-conscious and ensure fire extinguishers are installed in homes and business premises.
He also advised the public to keep the fire service emergency numbers handy: 08067439223, 08054353501, or 615.
