The Benue State Police Command has arrested three suspected armed robbers and recovered 34 mobile phones, three HP laptops, and two MP3 players from them.
Police spokesperson, SP Udeme Edet, disclosed this in a statement on Friday in Makurdi, noting that the suspects were apprehended on August 31 during a stop-and-search operation at Orokam Junction along Obollo Afor Road.
The arrested suspects were identified as Mujahid Mohammed, 21; Yahaya Abdullahi, 21; and Kalipha Mohammed, 28 — all residents of Mararaba and Nyanya, Abuja.
According to Edet, the suspects confessed to being members of a robbery gang that had been terrorising residents of Orokam in Benue State and several communities in Enugu State.
“They confessed to having robbed six flats in the Umukasi area and ten flats in the St. Theresa area of Nsukka, Enugu State,” she stated.
The suspects also revealed that their ringleader, Abba Mohammed, 27, escaped with the gang’s weapons during their arrest. The police confirmed that efforts were ongoing, in collaboration with Enugu and Gombe State commands, to apprehend the fugitive.
The police said investigations are underway to trace the rightful owners of the recovered items.
Meanwhile, the Benue Commissioner of Police, CP Emenari Ifeanyi, commended the swift response of the patrol team and reiterated the command’s determination to rid the state of criminal elements.
He further urged members of the public to continue providing timely and useful information to the police to enhance security in the state.
